Michael Cretu:
First of all i would like to compliment all contestants on their great work. The overall level of the recieved remixes was very strong. I was never awaiting so many great mixes to be sent in. Nearly all songs we recieved we´re of a very high standard. That`s why our decision was not made easy. The remixes we listened to were all very different in style and it was interesting to see what can be done with just a few original tracks.
Xound: Do you think that the remixers understand the essence of Enigma?
Michael Cretu: Definitely, i even heard samples from Enigma pt.1 in the remixes.
Xound: On which criteria were the remixes judged?
Michael Cretu: I must state that it turned out to be more work than i had originally planned, because it was very important to me that the decision was made wisely and fairly.
Different criteria came into play while listening to the mixes. First originality, then sensibility meaning: the arrangement, overall build up of the song and the transitions inbetween and so on. Another major part was the sound quality. First i listened to the mixes on my studio monitors and then i sent them through my real time analyzer. The tracks were all very well done. There were only a few contestants that only used the original tracks. Most of the remixers were very inspired and created a totally new song.
On of my aims was to let the contestant be imaginative. A good example is our third prize winner „Crybaby“ by Uwe Griggel from Berlin. There is nearly nothing left of the original except the pizzicato strings.
Xound: How was the contest for you and would you do something similar in the future?
Michael Cretu: I enjoyed it alot and i would love to anytime.
